Room

Room Review:

Room is a 2015 independently made film which will have you on the each of your seat screaming at the T.V. This film is about two captives escaping from the room they are kept in and what life is like after spending years as a prisoner cut off from society. Brie Larson steals the entire film with her phenomenal performance as Ma never has a character made me feel the love and anguish of being a mother like this. I couldn't take my eyes off of her every scene she was in filled me with a sense urgency despite this Larson made her very likeable and very much relatable which is undeniably hard because of the characters harrowing life. Director Lenny Abrahamson uses his unique story telling for this dark thriller which will weirdly leave you feeling lighter by the end.

Jack (Jacob Tremblay) is 5 years old he has grown up in an amazing world filled things such as lamp, sink and T.V and every day him and his Mum scream to see if the aliens outside will hear them. However after an incident when scary Old Nick visits, Ma decides she has had enough and tells Jack the truth, that Room is only a tiny part of a much bigger world. The reality of the situation is that seven years ago Ma was kidnapped by Old Nick and has been kept prisoner in a sound proof shed at the bottom of his garden. Ma creates a plan so that she and Jack can escape and explore the extraordinary world outside of Room. However after escaping Ma realises the world is not the same as it was seven years ago and the trauma of Room is catching up with her.

What makes this film uniquely heartbreaking is that it is told from Jacks point of view and the film is often narrated through his inner monologue. Having dark themes such as rape, mental health and kidnapping told through the naive perspective of a 5 year old adds an overwhelming tone of despair to the story. However as I mentioned before this films ending will leave you with a smile on your face because although a 5 years old perspective is naive it is also filled with so much hope, that as an audience member you can truly believe that the rest of his life will be overwhelmingly joyful.

This is a story of recovery and although the beginning is a hard watch as both Ma and Jack recover from their trauma the audience can see the light at the end of the tunnel. I really enjoyed this film and loved that it transitioned from a dark thriller into a light-hearted film about family and repairing your life. I would definitely recommend this film.
